What is a Swamp Cooler?
Swamp coolers are an alternative to air conditioning. They can significantly cool the air while using relatively little energy.
Although they can be extremely effective, their effectiveness is dependent on the local climate and the efficiency of the evaporative medium.
Swamp Cooler Effectiveness
Swamp coolers evaporate water into the atmosphere. The water evaporates into the air and takes energy from it, which cools off the temperature.
How hot the air is and how high the humidity is will determine the effectiveness of the process. Swamp coolers can be very effective in lowering the temperature of hot air by as much as 30 degrees when humidity is low, such as 20% relative humidity.
Hot means more than 90 degrees F. You will experience a lower temperature drop at lower temperatures and greater humidity.
A swamp cooler can drop from 125°F to 83°F at 2% relative humidity. But, at 80% humidity, it can only drop 75°F to 72°F.
These theoretical potentials are only estimates. Swamp coolers’ actual effectiveness depends on their evaporative media, as well as access to fresh air.
Evaporative Media and Swamp Cooler Effectiveness
The effectiveness of swamp coolers can be greatly affected by the design of evaporative media. You want an evaporative medium that can absorb a lot of water, and then put that water in contact with moving air.
Swamp coolers can achieve 95% efficiency with the best evaporative media. Evaporative media that are poorly designed might only achieve half the effectiveness.
Evaporative media can also degrade over time. Many evaporative media, such as aspen pads, degrade quite quickly. They lose effectiveness as they become less effective.
Evaporative media can lose its effectiveness over time if they get clogged with debris. As long as the media is intended to do so, it is a good idea to clean the inlet of evaporative media as often as possible.
Air Access is Critical to Evaporative Cooler Efficiency
Air conditioners rely on being able to recirculate and cool air step-by-step. Evaporative coolers on the other side need to have access to hot, fresh air in order to function. An evaporative cooler that only takes in cool air will have lower effectiveness because the air it draws in is cooler and humid.
An evaporative cooler must have hot air access in order to be effective. This can be done by placing it outside, next to an open window, or having an external vent.
